The HBO Max animated series Gremlins: Mogwai Mysteries will be a prequel to the 1984 film Gremlins and its 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
Set in 1920s Shanghai, eastern China, Gremlins: Mogwai Secrets tells the story of an encounter between 10-year-old Sam Wing and Gizmo, a young Mogwai. Together with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo embark on a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering and sometimes fighting monsters and colorful spirits from Chinese folklore. In their quest to return Gizmo to his family and find the legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil gremlins.
Two seasons for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai
Scheduled for HBO Max and Cartoon Network (ACME Night Block), Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Animation and will consist of two seasons of ten episodes each. The first episode will have its world premiere at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 13. Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Sam Register (Animaniacs), and Jie Chun (TKO Studios) and Brendan Hay (Robot Chicken) are executive producers. Dan Krall (Coraline) is his supervising producer. Note that the voice team includes comedians Isaac Wang, Ming-Na Wen, B.D. Wong, James Hong, AJ LoCashio, Gabriel Neva Green, and Matthew Reese.
