Facebook has decided to provide its groups with a number of new features and tools to enable healthier discussions. Like it or not, Reels are coming to groups where members can share tutorials or any other type of video using the now popular format. You can also update the group’s profile to share what you might have in common and indicate that you’re open to messages. And if you want to broadcast an event, you can share public Facebook events as Instagram stories.

The social media giant also makes it easier to combat the spread of misinformation within Groups. Administrators can now automatically move messages containing what are found to be false claims (and therefore verified by fact checkers) to pending messages and even automatically block their authors. This should encourage good faith discussions and decisions about possible bans.

Facebook is also doing its best to promote conversations by testing an extension that allows administrators to allow content that could be considered harassment, such as describing fish as “fatty.”This will only be available to very dedicated administrators who have demonstrated exemplary behavior on the platform. In another test, admins can award points to members of their community who contribute. You can customize badges for new registrants, etc.

These changes are both an initiative to promote positive engagement and a recognition that groups have sometimes been the source of Facebook’s biggest misinformation problems. This created problems for some communities during the 2020 election and banned hundreds of QAnon groups. The ability to allow mislabeled content, if you will, is unusual. This shows that Facebook wants to allow groups to override their own moderation system if they think the algorithms have made a mistake.
