Hyundai makes air purifier from recycled Ioniq 5 parts

Hyundai is reusing components from its Ioniq 5 to make it an air purifier.

Every car, every vehicle in a broader sense, is the result of a long, very long development process, during which manufacturers create many pre-production cars that will never see the light of day. Rather than throw out one of the Ioniq 5 test vehicles entirely, Hyundai came up with the idea of giving some components a second life by turning them into an air purifier.

According to the description in the YouTube video below, the model “has gone through a lot of testing to keep us safe.”The video also states that the vehicle was used for a full year to test the Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS), ambient noise control and air tunnel noise.

The video in question shows how Hyundai engineers disassembled the Ioniq 5 down to its smallest components and then reimagined a completely different product with those different parts. Some of the reusable components may include a fan, door panels, an LED ceiling light, an entertainment unit, and of course, an air filtration unit. The engineers have also placed a 20-inch wheel on top of the case (meaning the purifier should be big enough) and the brand logo adds a very nice little touch.

Although many parts of our vehicles, including batteries, are already recyclable, this is a very smart experience. This suggests that there are other ways to give a second life to a car that will no longer be used as such. Note that while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been available for a few months in Europe and France, the brand has just started its marketing in the United States.
