Infinity Ward confirms a new Call of Duty game is in development, likely to be a sequel to Modern Warfare

Infinity Ward, one of the studios working on the Call of Duty franchise, just posted on Twitter what is essentially a confirmation of a new COD game. The tweet ends with a little hint of what the studio is working on, and it looks like it could be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare.

“Stay Frosty”is a recurring quote in the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series, and Infinity Ward usually leads the way in this particular series. There were rumors earlier last year that a new Modern Warfare sequel could be coming in 2022, and it looks like it’s pretty much confirmed.

In Activision Blizzard’s latest quarterly financial results released Thursday, the publisher confirmed that Infinity Ward is working on “the most ambitious plan in franchise history.”

Call of Duty Modern Warfare sequel and new Warzone ‘experience’ could be on the cards

Industry insider Tom Henderson revealed earlier last year that a sequel to Call of Duty Modern Warfare could be coming along with a new Warzone map. Additionally, there are rumors that COD 2022’s single-player campaign will focus on the war on drugs against the Colombian cartel.

Henderson stated that the next Call of Duty is being developed under the name “Project Cortez”. Modern Warfare 2019 ended in a very interesting place when Captain Price gathered his forces and formed Task Force 141.

Details on the new game are still scarce, but there’s a good chance Infinity Ward will stay close to the tone of 2019’s Modern Warfare, with a much grittier tone than other COD series.

Activision also confirmed that premium sales for Call of Duty Vanguard were down from the previous year, Black Ops Cold War, and that overall Warzone engagement was down.

While the series remains uniquely successful, perhaps COD needs a new dose of freshness and energy. 2019’s Modern Warfare was able to do that for the series, and maybe Infinity Ward can do that and more this time around.
