Although there are still a few months left before Apple launches the iPhone 14 series, there are already many rumors that reveal some details. So far, we’ve heard about the iPhone 14’s displays, cameras, and some other standout features like satellite connectivity. A new report has been added to the list of rumors that talks about the charging port of future iPhones. Apple has stuck with the design of the port for years and refrained from moving to the more widely used USB-C style port despite strong pressure not only from Android competitors but also from authorities like the European Commission.
For years, users have been asking (or rather hoping) for Apple to bring a USB-C port to the iPhone. This feature is welcome as Apple itself has moved to USB-C ports for the latest chargers, MacBooks, iPads, Macs and monitors, but has left iPhones with limited lighting ports. However, the disappointment is likely to continue with the iPhone 14 series as well, according to the iDrop News website. The iPhone 14 series will reportedly still have the same Lightning port. This means that those in the Apple universe will still have to carry a separate iPhone charging cable with them. The same USB-C cable used for a MacBook or iPad will not work with an iPhone.
Lightning port, but with USB 3.0
However, not everything will remain exactly the same. The report adds that while the Lightning port will remain, the technology it supports will move to USB 3.0. Currently, the Lightning ports on the latest iPhone models operate at USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) speeds. With USB 3.0, data transfer speeds reach 5Gbps. Another exciting news is that this technology will be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. Non-professional versions may have a USB 2.0 Lightning port.
iPhone without port
The report also claims that Apple is not ditching the Lightning Port for the iPhone as it acts as a revenue model where the firm licenses the Lightning connector to third parties that make cables and other accessories. It also mentions that Apple iPhones may take a couple of years before they become completely portless.
In case you haven’t noticed yet, Apple is already moving steadily towards an iPhone without a port. The company is actively promoting AirPods and wireless headphones along with MagSafe wireless charging technology, indirectly pushing more users towards wireless technology.
