iPhone 15 is expected to be announced sometime in next month if Apple follows its usual trend of hosting a fall event in the second week of September. The upcoming iPhone 15 series is expected to arrive with a couple of worthy upgrades like camera improvements across the lineup. Now, if you are planning to upgrade your current iPhone, we have a piece of good news for you.
A report from Bloomberg has suggested that carriers might offer “aggressive” discounts on iPhone 15 lineup amid dwindling smartphone demand. The report says that the move will be aimed at increasing the sale of iPhones as smartphone demands have hit a new low globally.
Global smartphone shipments decline
A few years ago, the global smartphone market saw an upward trend where the shipment numbers were increasing for companies on a yearly basis. However, the market reached a saturation point in 2017, according to a report by Counterpoint Research. Ever since, the smartphone market has declined on year basis, except in 2021, wherein the demand rose a bit.
The major reason why the smartphone market has been witnessing a decline is the economic conditions that prevailed after the global pandemic, forcing users to not spend on new phones every year. Another reason behind the downfall is that smartphone technology has reached a stage of a plateau.
Users no longer find it necessary to change smartphones every year. According to data, an average person uses his/her smartphone for at least three to four years, before upgrading to a newer smartphone.
Counterpoint Research has predicted that the global smartphone market will hit numbers that will be the lowest in a decade. The shipments are estimated to fall down around 6% on a yearly basis to 1.15 billion, which is the lowest number since 2014.
Even Apple is not spared
In the last quarter’s earning call, Apple revealed that iPhone sales have fallen as compared to the same quarter in the previous year. Moreover, Apple said that it expects decreased numbers even in this quarter and iPhone 15 might not perform as iPhone 14 did in the months after its release.
Amid looming conditions, carriers are expected to lure customers with hefty discounts on iPhone 15.
This is what Bloomberg has to say about discounts on iPhone 15:
“So far this year it’s been record low upgrades across all carriers,” said Jeff Fieldhack, Counterpoint research director for North America. “The iPhone 15 launch is a window for carriers to steal high-value customers. And with that big iPhone 12 installed base up for grabs promos are going to be aggressive, leaving Apple in a good spot.”
