iPhone with USB-C could signal big change for Apple

An iPhone with a USB-C port could mean a major transition for Apple. The Apple brand could get rid of the Lightning port entirely.

Apple could go further than the first reports announced a few days ago and prepare a real split with its proprietary Lightning port. Indeed, the Cupertino-based company is working on accessories, including AirPods as well as keyboard and mouse peripherals that charge via USB-C, according to renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

An iPhone with a USB-C port could mean a deep transition for Apple

Ming-Chi Kuo shared this prediction in response to a tweet he posted on May 11. In this post, he claimed that the Apple brand will change the design of its iPhone to have a universal port, so to speak, by the second half of 2023. Shortly thereafter, Bloomberg confirmed the analyst’s prediction.

But when exactly will Apple decide to transition its accessories to USB-C? Hard to tell. Ming-Chi Kuo only claims that the transition will take place “in the near future.”According to a Bloomberg report released on Friday, the Cupertino-based company won’t sell an iPhone with a USB-C port until next year. In any case, it would have been more logical for the American giant to make this transition immediately, but nothing can guarantee that the Apple brand will go this way.

As with the potential USB-C iPhone, Apple’s motivation to rid its accessories of the Lightning port may have more to do with a desire to go unnoticed by the authorities than a desire to offer a better user experience. In an effort to limit e-waste, the European Union has been promoting a universal charging port over the past few years. Last month, this initiative led to USB-C becoming mandatory for small and medium sized electronic devices.
