Fixing stuttering, freezing and lag issues in The Last of Us Part 1

Fix The Last Of Us Part 1 Stuttering, Freezing & Lag on PC

Luckily, the developers at Naughty Dogs have admitted that TLOU Part 1 stutters, freezes, and constantly slows down on PC. They tweeted that a fix for The Last of Us Part 1 on PC has been launched. Since the fix has already been released, you can restart your game or PC to apply it.

But as with a few frustrated players, the recent hotfix didn’t fix the technical issues on PC. So, here are a few fixes to help you solve The Last of Us stuttering, freezing and lagging issues:

Check system requirements

Before we proceed with any workarounds, please check if your system meets the minimum or recommended system requirements to run TLOU P1. So here are the minimum system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10 (version 1909 or newer)
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 1500X / Intel Core i7-4770K
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 470 (4 GB), AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT (4 GB) / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB)
  • Storage: 100 GB of free space

Here are the recommended requirements:

  • OS: Windows 10 (version 1909 or newer)
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X / Intel Core i7-8700
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (8 GB), AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT (8 GB) / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER (8 GB), NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (8 GB)
  • Storage: 100 GB of free space

In addition to the above requirements, the game requires a 64-bit OS and a processor. It is worth noting that an SSD is also recommended when working with TLOU.

The Last of Us Update Part 1

If there are permanent fixes and fixes, you should update TLOU Part 1 to the latest version. If you don’t upgrade, you’ll still experience crashes and freezes. You can update the game from Steam and Epic Games.

On Steam:

  • Launch Steam and go to the library.

Check your game files

If you are missing some game files or data, chances are that you will experience stuttering, freezes and lags on your PC. You can check your game files on Epic Games and Steam to resolve these issues. So, here is how you can verify game files on Steam:

  • Launch Steam > right click The Last of Us Part 1 > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files.

Here is how you can verify game files in Epic Games:

  • Launch Epic Games > right click on TLOU Part 1 > Manage option > Confirm button.

Update your graphics drivers

Outdated graphics drivers can cause freezes and crashes when launching The Last of Us Part 1. So, here’s how you can update your graphics drivers to the latest version:

  • Find Device Manager in the Start Menu.
  • Click on Device Manager.
  • Double-click Display Adapters and right-click Graphics Card.
  • Select the Update Driver option from the drop-down menu.
