Jailbreakers may view real-time GPU information in Metal-based apps via MetalHudLoader.

Have you ever wished you could evaluate the GPU performance of your smartphone? You would be hard-pressed to find a good method on the iPhone; until today, that is, unless you had a great eye for jitteriness.

Introducing MetalHudLoader, a fresh and cost-free jailbreak tweak created by iOS developer pookjw that, as demonstrated in the screenshot example above, overlays any Metal-enabled program you might be operating with a graphics overview heads-up display.

You may observe for yourself that MetalHudLoader shows a broad variety of GPU-related data, such as:

  • What kind of GPU are you using?
  • The display’s current resolution
  • The display’s current frame rate
  • The available graphics memory

When a compatible Metal-based app is opened, MetalHudLoader is intended to run instantly. The most likely explanation for why you don’t see the interface when you run an app is that it isn’t Metal-driven.

For those who are unaware, apps may interface with the graphics hardware built into any Apple mobile chipset using the Metal API.

MetalHudLoader isn’t really practical for most users because it merely interferes with the viewing experience, but if you’re ever want to see how well an app handles visuals, it might be useful.
