The same wallpaper all day is boring. I also got tired of manually changing the wallpaper daily, so I started digging into it. And luckily found a feature with which you can automatically change the wallpaper on your Mac.
Interestingly, you don’t need third-party apps to change wallpapers automatically. And rest assured, since the process is not very tiring, you will also get fresh wallpapers every day (or every hour). There are only two key steps: create a folder with the wallpaper you want, and then put it in automatic rotation.
Here’s how to make the wallpaper automatically change on your macOS device.
- Create a folder for automatic wallpaper changer on Mac
- Change Mac Wallpaper Automatically Through System Preferences or Settings

Now there are two ways to do this:
1. Use the Photos app to create a wallpaper folder.
Here’s what you need to do if you’re syncing images between iPhone or Mac, or if the wallpaper is stored in the Photos app.
- Open the Photos app on Mac.
- Select the images you want to set as wallpaper and right click.
- Click Add to → New album.
2. Create a wallpaper folder on Mac
- Select all the images you want to use as wallpaper and add them to one folder.
- Place the folder wherever you want, but remember the path to the folder as it will be needed in the next step.
Change Mac Wallpaper Automatically Through System Preferences or Settings
Notably, Apple has made major changes to System Preferences in macOS Ventura. So the steps will vary depending on which OS you are currently using. Here is a detailed guide for both.
Automate Mac wallpapers when using macOS Ventura
- Click the Apple logo in the upper right corner of the screen and select System Preferences.
- Scroll down to the “Wallpaper”section.
- Click “Add Folder”or “Add Photo Album”depending on your previous steps. (you may have to scroll down).
- Select the folder/album created in the previous step.
- Click Select.
- Now click Auto Rotate (the first image in the album).
- In the “Change image”option, select the desired time interval.
- Also, check Randomly.
How to automatically change wallpapers in macOS Monterey or earlier
- Click the Apple logo → System Preferences.
- Select the Desktop and Screen Saver option.
- Here,
- Select Photos → Under Albums, select a wallpaper album.
- Select Folders → plus sign + → select a wallpaper folder.
- Click Select.
- Now check the “Change image:”box and then select the frequency by opening the dropdown box next to it.
- You can also check the “Random order”box.
Thanks to automatic synchronization, any images you add to the wallpaper album will also be added to the list of images that will be set as wallpaper.
