How to use the Depth app on Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra trailer at the Far Out event was filled with exciting new features. And with hands-on experience, we explore other areas of application for watches. Apple recently put a support page on the Depth app, one of the Apple Watch Ultra apps, to quell everyone’s curiosity. So what is it and how do you use the Depth app on your Apple Watch Ultra?

What is the Depth app on Apple Watch Ultra?

The Apple Watch Ultra is made especially durable for athletes, especially sailors. The new Apple Watch Ultra Depth app maximizes the underwater experience. You can wear it for diving up to 40 meters (130 feet). Below this the screen can turnbright yellow, and some features may become unusable altogether.

In addition, the Depth app can provide data on the current time, current depth, maximum depth during a session, and water temperature. In addition, the depth sensor has an accuracy range of plus or minus 1 meter and complies with the EN13319 standard. However, it does not provide information about decompression stops, gas analysis, or other dive options that scuba divers need.

So make sure you have a backup depth gauge and a timer or watch to avoid injury while diving deep. In addition, Apple has developed the upcoming Oceanic+ app, an embedded dive computer. So the wait will be justified! Now let’s learn how to use the Depth app on Apple Watch Ultra.

Underwater activities you can track with the Depth app

  • swimming in the underwater pool
  • snorkeling
  • shallow freediving
  • Scuba diving

Steps to use the Depth app via autoplay

According to Apple’s support page, the Depth app on the Apple Watch Ultra launches automatically when you submerge the watch in water. Alternatively, you can start/end the Depth application session manually. Here’s how.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General. Here you will see the “Autostart”section.
  3. Now turn on the Auto-Launch App toggle under the WHEN SUBMERGED label.

  1. Open settings. Tap Depth.
  2. Here you can select feet or meters for depth and degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius for temperature.

Start or end a Depth app session on Apple Watch Ultra

When your Apple Watch Ultra dives to a depth of one meter or more, the Depth app launches and the session begins. In addition, Water Lock is activated when the Depth app is opened, either automatically or manually. This will stop the screen from activating and prevent any erroneous input on the screen or using the Digital Crown.

So, how can you record your workouts like open water swimming? Well, you must open the Workout app and start exercising before submerging your Ultra watch in water.

To turn off the water block and end your Depth app session, press and hold the Digital Crown once. In addition, the watch will make certain sounds to remove water from the speaker when the screen is unlocked. After the dive, the Depth app will present a dive report with a detailed description. You can also see water temperature and depth data on the timeline in the Health app after you close the summary in the Depth app.

So that’s all for today, friends!

The Depth app on the Apple Watch Ultra is definitely great! But only experienced divers should use it for recreational diving up to 130 feet (40 meters). I suggest that you always dive with a companion and follow the safety rules when diving. In addition, during the dive, frequently check its operation. If there is any obvious malfunction, approach carefully.
