Oculus Quest is a very good VR headset. Unfortunately, there is no built-in parental control system. However, parents have several options.
Oculus Quest, also known as Meta Quest, is a lot of fun, but without a third-party screen, it’s hard to keep track of how your kids are using the headset. There is no full parental control for VR, but you can still set a number of restrictions on some important features.
Keep in mind that Quest does not have parental controls.
The first step in setting up parental controls on your Quest headset is to know that there are no parental controls. Although Quest requires a Facebook account to use, so content filtering is not possible for a user who would normally be over 13 years old.
Sure, you can look for age-appropriate games and content before letting your child play them, but if you’re looking for a filter that can be activated to restrict certain content, you won’t find it. Quest has a built-in browser that also lacks parental controls.
However, this does not mean that there is no solution.
Broadcast to other devices
One of the biggest concerns about parental controls in VR is that there is no screen on which to watch what the child sees. They can watch movies and other online videos on the headset without others knowing. You can solve this problem by transferring the video from the headset to another device.
To do this, make sure the headset and the device you want to watch on are on the same Wi-Fi network. Then download the Oculus app on your phone and open Settings in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click “Connect a new headset”and follow the instructions.
When Oculus is turned on, tap the icon in the top right corner of the screen that looks like a headset with a Wi-Fi signal. In the “Stream from”section, select your headset and click “Start”. After that, you will be able to see on your smartphone what the user of the headset sees.
save files
You can also set up the headphones to sync recorded files with the mobile app so you can see what your child is downloading. In your headset, press the Oculus button to open the main menu, then select the Apps button. Select the Files app and tap the cloud icon in the top right corner.
You can view files saved in the Synced Media section of the Devices section of the Oculus mobile app. This way you will know what your child is recording on the device. Keep in mind that these files will be automatically deleted after 14 days.
Set restrictions at the router level
While Quest doesn’t have built-in parental controls, you can restrict access to content directly from your router or box. Most of these devices have parental controls that allow you to filter certain content, monitor traffic, or even block certain websites.
It all depends on your device. Learn, see what you can do. Sometimes these controls do not work with all browsers. Don’t forget to check in a helmet.
Other Security Aspects to Consider
Remember, even if the headset had built-in parental controls, there is no perfect solution. Using a combination of these various aspects, as well as a third-party networking solution, will provide the best control.
And even if you don’t really care about the content, having such systems in place can be good for your overall online security. Virtual reality headsets, like any electronic device, are susceptible to hacking. Make it a habit to view your activity history.
