Not happy with the current name of your Apple mouse, trackpad, or keyboard? In this guide, you will learn how to quickly change the name of these devices on your Mac.
Default name
Once you set up the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad on your Mac, they will be named Magic Keyboard/Mouse/Trackpad Your_first_name. So, in my case it is Ankur Magic Keyboard.
Why change the name
1) Using different names helps if you have two or more keyboards, mice and trackpads. For example:
- New magic mouse and old magic mouse
- White Magic trackpad and Black Magic trackpad
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Magic Keyboard without Touch ID, etc.
2) If macOS didn’t automatically set the name of the connected peripherals or you don’t like it, you can manually change it to something meaningful and useful.
How to rename Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad
- Make sure a keyboard, mouse, or trackpad is connected to your Mac. When it is, you can use it and also see the battery percentage.
- Click the Apple icon and select System Preferences.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Click the information icon ⓘ next to the name of the connected Magic Keyboard, Mouse, or Trackpad.
- Click the Name field and enter a new name.
- Finally, click Done.
You have successfully renamed your Bluetooth devices. Actions for third party keyboards, mice, and trackpads will also be the same if the manufacturer supports renaming.
Note. There is no downtime or disconnection after changing the Magic Keyboard, Mouse, or Trackpad name.
Can’t rename mouse, keyboard, and trackpad on Mac?
1) Make sure the device is connected to your computer. The Name field will be grayed out if it is not enabled.
2) Restart your Mac ( > Restart).
3) Turn off your keyboard, mouse or trackpad using the switch and turn them back on after 15 seconds.
4) Apple allows you to rename your Magic keyboard, mouse, and trackpad, but some third-party companies can’t. In this case, you are stuck with a generic name, which is usually a model name or number, such as EABC7235A.
5) If all else fails, forget and reconnect your mouse, keyboard, and trackpad, and then rename them. For this:
- Go to System Settings > Bluetooth > information icon ⓘ next to the name > Disable and then Forget This Device > Forget Device. If you don’t see Disable, click on Forget This Device.
- Turn off your mouse, keyboard, or trackpad using the physical switch.
- Turn the switch back on and navigate to your Mac’s Bluetooth settings to complete the pairing. You can also connect the Lightning cable to your Magic devices and the other end to your Mac to connect and pair.
