Although you may have guessed by now, you cannot use the sea you fall into as a source of water. Luckily you have a GPS that you can pull out with M and then look for a river inland which would mean fresh water. Now just interact with water using E and you can quench your thirst in Sons of the Forest.
Since you cannot collect water at the start of the game, you must build your base around the river. After a while, you will learn how to filter and collect water for your base. After that, drinking water in the game will be easy.
One of the main uses of water is stamina, and thus, without it, you won’t be able to run or complete most of the tasks in the game.
