How to set a custom battery limit in Windows 11/10

Windows 11 appeared 7 years after Windows 10. However, nothing has changed dramatically. For example, low battery life and recharging. These two problems haunted users like nightmares. Either the battery used to be quickly discharged, or the charge capacity was completely over. As a result, Windows came up with a solution to limit battery power. In Windows, this is called a custom battery limit. In this guide, we will discuss what it is and how you can set your own battery limit in Windows.

What is a custom battery limit in Windows?

As it turns out, lithium-ion batteries are notorious for running out of charge cycles. This means that if you charge your laptop battery from 0 to 100% about 1000 times, its life cycle will end and you will end up with a laptop that lasts no more than 15 minutes on a charge.

All lithium-ion batteries lose their ability to hold a charge over time. Your laptop is especially vulnerable because it requires a lot of power, heats up easily, and breaks down faster if it’s stored in an overheated room without proper ventilation. How then can you increase the battery life of your laptop?

While there are many ways to keep your battery healthy, one simple way to extend the life of your laptop battery is to limit the amount of time it can charge. While not all laptops have a custom battery limit feature, some do. Here’s our guide on how to do it.

How to set a custom battery limit on Windows 11/10 laptops

Setting a custom battery limit is a completely different process. As it turns out, this varies from device to device. Therefore, we will discuss this thing in different sections. It doesn’t matter what brand of laptop you have, we will try to list as many manufacturers as possible.

Setting a custom battery limit on Acer laptops

If you have an Acer laptop, you can set a default charge limit using the Acer Care Center. However, according to our results, it does not work after Windows 11. For now, if you have a Windows 10 PC, you can use this feature and turn on the battery limiter. Here are the steps:

  1. Press the Windows button and open Acer Care Center.
  2. If you don’t have it, go to the Acer Driver and Support website.
  3. Enter your serial number and download Acer Care Center.
  4. Launch Acer Care Center and click Check in the left section.
  5. Here you’ll find a toggle next to Battery Limit. Turn this switch on.

Now, whenever you charge your laptop and your Acer laptop reaches 80% charge, it will stop charging which increases battery life.

Setting a Custom Battery Limit on MSI Notebooks

If you have an MSI laptop, you should be glad that the charge limiter is already working. However, if you don’t feel like this is happening, here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Launch MSI Dragon Center using the Dragon button on your keyboard or using the Windows key.
  2. Click on the battery icon.
  3. You now have two options: “Balanced”and “Best for Battery”. Choose any of them and you’re done.

As already mentioned, the Balanced option, which is selected by default, charges the battery up to 80%. However, if you want to take better care of your battery, you can select the Best for Battery option, which will further reduce the charge limit to 60%.

Setting a custom battery limit for HP laptops

In the case of HP laptops, setting a custom battery charge limit is slightly different. This is because you do not need to download or use any additional applications. Instead, it is built into the system’s BIOS. The only thing is that you need to go into the BIOS and do it carefully. Relax, it’s simple. Follow these steps to enable charge limiter on HP laptops:

  1. Turn off your laptop.
  2. Now press the power button on the laptop.
  3. Once you see the HP logo pop up, start pressing F10 at the same time to open the BIOS window.
  4. Using the right arrow key, swipe to the System Configuration or Configuration tab.
  5. If the configuration tab is missing, look for the “Advanced”tab.
  6. Now using the up and down arrow keys navigate to Adaptive Battery Optimizer.
  7. Press the Enter key and turn it on.
  8. Press Esc and select Save and Exit.

Now, as soon as your laptop turns on, the battery will be capped at 80%. Unfortunately, unlike MSI laptops, you don’t have the option to change the limits. What’s more, if your laptop doesn’t have Adaptive Battery Optimizer in the BIOS menu, you won’t be able to limit your charge.

Setting a custom battery limit for Asus laptops

If you are an Asus laptop user, you will be pleased to know that your laptop is already equipped with Healthy Charging and it is enabled by default. However, if you are unsure, here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Open the MyAsus app.
  2. If you don’t have this app installed, please follow this link and download it.
  3. Once open, go to the Power & Performance tab.
  4. Under the Power & Performance tab, you will find Battery Charging. There, select the maximum lifespan mode.
  5. In this mode, your battery will be charged to a maximum of 60%.
  6. Click OK to save your changes.

Here is how you can limit battery life in Asus laptops. Interestingly, if the battery even gets to 59%, it will start charging, making it a great option.

Setting a custom battery limit in Lenovo laptops

If you have a Lenovo laptop, you also have the option to limit battery life to a certain extent. Interestingly, unlike HP, where this feature is limited to top shelf laptops, Lenovo Vantage is compatible with just about every laptop, from the Ideapad to the Legion. Here are the steps you need to follow to set the battery limit on Lenovo laptops:

  1. Open the Lenovo Vantage app.
  2. If you don’t have Lenovo Vantage, please follow this link and download it.
  3. Once downloaded, run the installer following the instructions on the screen.
  4. Launch the app and go to “Device Settings”.
  5. Click on power.
  6. Now scroll down a bit and go to battery settings.
  7. Now toggle the switch next to Battery Threshold.

Unfortunately, you don’t have the option to change the threshold. The threshold works if, for example, if the charge falls below 50%, it will start charging and stop when it is 80%.

Setting a Custom Battery Limit on Dell Laptops

If you have a Dell laptop, chances are you are already worried about its battery. Dell laptops are notorious for having battery problems before any other laptop. As a result, setting a custom battery limit is critical for them. Follow the steps below to do the same.

  1. Open the Dell Power Manager application on your PC.
  2. If you don’t have Dell Power Manager, you can download it from this link.
  3. The application will be automatically installed after you click “Get”.
  4. Open the app and go to the Battery Information tab.
  5. Click “Settings”in the upper right corner.
  6. Select the “Mainly AC”option.

Unfortunately, unlike other apps, you don’t have the option to change the battery charging threshold. However, opting for predominantly AC ensures that your laptop will always run on a wired connection and not consume a lot of power on battery power.

Can I keep my laptop connected to the network while in use?

If your laptop is plugged in, it won’t harm your computer because modern laptop batteries prevent overcharging. However, continuously charging the battery to its maximum capacity may cause abnormal swelling and shorten battery life.

Most laptops from companies such as Acer, Lenovo, HP, MSI, Dell, and Asus have a built-in battery limiter designed to extend battery life during use. It’s also helpful if you always keep your device plugged in and fully charged.

However, manufacturers generally recommend a maximum charge of 80% for devices. Therefore, your battery will automatically stop charging when it reaches 80% capacity if you have a device from the aforementioned manufacturers.

The maximum RSOC (relative state of charge) of your laptop’s battery can be configured either in the BIOS (eg HP) or manufacturer-specific system companion application (eg MyAsus and Dragon Center).

bottom line

Well, that is all we have on how to set a custom battery limit in Windows 10 and 11. We hope this guide has helped you. If you don’t find your laptop manufacturer listed, your laptop may not be well known and may not have an option to limit charging. If you have any doubts or questions, be sure to comment below.
