How to find out the IP address of your laptop

Common Methods for Finding Your Laptop’s IP Address

Network router interface

Each Internet Service Provider (ISP) has a unique interface. This can be used to reconfigure some additional aspects of network settings. You will be able to find information and options that may not be available in the system’s network settings.

This network interface can be accessed via an IP address. This can be obtained from the provider. The user can access it through a web browser. The IP address can be in an additional interface setting.

Third party websites and applications

There are several third party programs that can be used to determine network settings. This is a long process as it requires downloading, installing and executing. You can use them or use a faster solution.

Checking the IP address in Microsoft Windows

If you are a Windows user, there are three ways to find out the device’s IP address. While the first two methods are standard, the last one may vary slightly on each Windows variant.

command line script

There is a very simple command that allows Windows users to check their IP addresses. The command we mention is part of a larger network cleanup process. Here are the steps to check your IP using CMD tool:

  • Launch a command line window. The easiest way to find this tool is to search for it in the search bar on the taskbar (Windows+S).
  • When the script window opens, enter the following command:

nslookup myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com

  • Press the Enter key to execute this line.
  • When the results appear, look in the “Address”section. You should see the IP address of the active network.

If you also want to find the IPv6 IP address, you can also run the ipconfig command.

Control Panel

The control panel also contains options for viewing and configuring the network. This can be used to check and change the IP address and DNS. The Control Panel interface hasn’t changed much in the last four versions of Windows; So the procedure is no different.

Use the following steps to find the IP address through the CPL window:

  • Raise the control panel window. This can be easily accessed by searching for Cpl.
  • Click on the network and internet settings tile.
  • Go to “Network and Sharing Center”.
  • In the left pane, select the Change adapter settings option. This will launch the network connections window.
  • Double-click the connected network. This can be a wireless or Ethernet connection.
  • In the Network Status window, click the Details button.
  • When the following window appears, check the “IPv4 Address”section. The value on the right is the IP address of your device.

Network settings

Recent versions of Windows have different settings layouts. This makes the steps different when trying to identify network information.

Windows 11

  • Press the Windows key and I to open the Settings app.
  • In the left pane, select the “Network and Internet”option.
  • Click on the type of network that is active on your system. It can be Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  • Go to the network properties option.
  • On this page, find the IPv4 address section. This can be found at the bottom of the page.

Windows 10

  • Open the Start menu and search for Settings.
  • Click on the network and internet settings tile.
  • From the set of options on the left panel, select Ethernet or WiFi. This setting depends on the type of local network.
  • Select the Network option and find the IPv4 address category.
  • If you are using a wireless connection, you will have to use the Properties link. This option will take you to the wireless information page.

Windows 8.1

  • Open the Start menu with the Windows button.
  • Locate the Network Connection Settings option. Now open the first search result.
  • From the Connections menu, select Network. The IP address will be displayed here.

Windows 7

  • Launch the Control Panel window on your PC.
  • In the Network and Internet section, select the View network status and tasks link.
  • In the View Active Networks section, click the Local Area Connection link. The LAN status window will be displayed.
  • Click the Details button on the General tab.
  • In the Network Connection Details window, select the IPv4 Address check box. This is your local IP address.
  • For both of these options, you will find the IP address listed in the network status.

Checking IP address on Mac

If you have a MacBook, there are two ways to find out the computer’s IP address.

macOS terminal

  • Navigate to the Applications folder and navigate to the Utilities folder.
  • Launch the Terminal tool.
  • When the script window appears, run any of these commands based on the active network −
  • USB LAN – ipconfig getifaddr en1
  • Wi-Fi – ipconfig getifaddr en0
  • Public IP address – curl ifconfig.me

System settings

  • Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of the window.
  • Select the System Preferences option from the pop-up menu.
  • In the left pane, select the Network option.
  • Wi-Fi users should click on the Wi-Fi option. Users with a USB connection must use the LAN or USB option.

Checking the IP Address on a Chromebook

If you have a Chromebook, you have two options to find their private IP address.

Chromebook settings

  • Expand the system tray by clicking on it. It is located in the lower right corner of the screen.
  • At the top of the tray, select the “Settings”option. Wait for the window to appear.
  • Select the Network tab from the main menu.
  • Select a wired or wireless connection option according to your connection type.
  • Scroll down the page to find the IP address. You can also use these options to set the IP address manually.

Web browser

  • Launch the Google Chrome browser on your Chromebook.
  • Type in chrome://systemthe address bar and press enter.
  • Call the search tool by pressing the Ctrl and F keys at the same time.
  • In the search overlay, look for ifconfig.
  • When you see it, click the Expand button next to the ifconfig option.
  • Look for the wlan0 section and the inet line in particular. The three numbers after it are the IP address of your internet connection.
