Sony shared in its latest quarterly reports that the PlayStation 5 has sold 17.3 million units during its lifetime. For comparison, the PlayStation 5 has already sold more in a year and a half than the Wii U has during its existence.
While that number is impressive in itself, compared to the number of units sold by the PS4 at this point in its existence, it tells a different story. The PS4 has sold 20.2 million units so far, and the PS5 is slightly behind that number.
However, much of this can be attributed to the PlayStation 5’s supply issues, as the console remains elusive for potential buyers. The console is still pretty hard to get, but despite that, it continues to sell relatively well.
PlayStation 5 shipment forecast lowered to 19.3 million from 22.6 million
Reports from analyst Daniel Ahmad suggest that Sony’s previous forecast of 22.6 million by March 31, 2022 has now been cut to 19.3 million. The chip shortage will reportedly continue into 2022, so it doesn’t look like the PlayStation 5 will get any easier to acquire during the year.
Sony’s quarterly results also contain interesting numbers related to Sony’s own games and sales. Compared to the same quarter last year, there appears to be a decline in sales of third-party and in-house games.
Much of this can be attributed to the PlayStation 5’s strong launch lineup, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Demon’s Souls, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
