If you’ve been following our ongoing iPhone jailbreak news with us, then you’ve probably noticed that Luca Todesco showed off the iOS 16 jailbreak at the Hexacon security conference last Friday.
The elephant in the cors room was a long drawn out question about whether Todesco plans to release his iOS 16 jailbreak, and while we had a good idea of what the answer to that question would be at the time, Todesco came out and confirmed his opinion. intentions on Twitter this week.
In responses on Twitter, Todesco said “of course not”in response to the question of whether his iOS 16 jailbreak should be released. He also added that it was not a full jailbreak – probably referring to the idea that there were no tweaks or any or other useful things that ordinary users would like to have in a jailbreak, and that it was a simple proof of concept. .
But while we already knew that was the case, there are other things Todesco said that are worth considering.
While Todesco plans to continue attacking iOS firmware as a seasoned security researcher for the foreseeable future, he adds that future jailbreak releases are likely to be much rarer following Apple’s new security mechanisms that shifted focus away from jailbreak based on one bug and more.. towards tech-based jailbreaks that are time-consuming. This makes it even harder to keep up with Apple’s frequent software updates.
Wondering why we only have iOS and iPadOS 14 jailbreak in today’s iOS and iPadOS 16 era, and why iOS and iPadOS 15 jailbreak is not available to the public yet? Here is your answer.
Todesco also predicted that future jailbreaks are unlikely to ever be based on 0day again, given how much these kinds of bugs and exploits cost when reported directly to Apple, we don’t blame security researchers for choosing to cash them out. not create. free jailbreaks of them. After all, what is their motivation?
But for Joshua Hill (@p0sixninja), this challenge is exactly the type of motivation he considers “interesting”. He even floated the idea of a Dream Team reunion after former jailbreak developer evad3rs @pod2g commented on Todesco’s performance. The commentary was both touching and inspiring.
Regardless of what seems like bad news, it’s important to remember that jailbreaking will always be possible as long as we have members of the jailbreak community willing to use iOS and iPadOS to make it happen. Despite being late to the party, several groups are currently working on jailbreaking iOS and iPadOS 15 as we speak.
Apple seems to be changing its approach to jailbreaking in the future, but anyone who wants to do so should continue to follow the sage advice to stay on the lowest possible firmware and avoid software updates.
