MediaTek formalizes its Dimensity 1080 chip, up to 200 MP for camera

MediaTek is framing its Dimensity 1080 chip with up to 200MP resolution for the camera.

MediaTek has just unveiled the Dimensity 1080 SoC, the platform that will be used to power mid-range smartphones. These smartphones offer much higher sales volumes than more expensive models and can tip the balance of power when it comes to operating systems and app platforms.

MediaTek draws up its Dimensity 1080 chip

The Dimensity 1080 chip replaces last year’s Dimensity 920 with 6nm engraving. And finally, the differences are small compared to the latter: there is a slight increase in CPU frequency (4%), but the CPU cluster, consisting of two ARM Cortex-A78 2.6 GHz (up from 2.5 GHz) and six ARM Cortex-A78 A55 2.0 GHz. The Mali-G68 MC4 GPU is still clocked at 950MHz.

However, MediaTek announces “significantly improved camera capabilities over its predecessor.”These claims probably come from support for 200 MP sensors. MediaTek has most likely changed or optimized their Image Processor (ISP).

up to 200 MP for camera

The official specs for the Dimensity 920 chip say “Max camera ISP 20MP + 20MP, 108MP.”If you add it all up, you get a maximum of 148 MP. To be precise, this is the number of raw pixels that can be processed by the sensor in a photo. This is before any post-provider processing is done.

The commitment to support components up to 200 MP is a very good promise. This announcement in any case tells us that the megapixel war is far from over and that 200MP devices will soon hit the mid-range segment. This is good for users, they will be able to take advantage of these additional MPs, for example, to increase the detail in their shots.

Unfortunately, most OEMs hide full resolution mode in device settings and few people use it. Samsung has a full resolution option in “automatic”mode. Xiaomi had a great “auto”mode at 27 MP, but it was removed. Case to follow!
