Meta Disbands Its Responsible Innovation Team

Meta Disbands Responsible Innovation Team. Internal reorganizations in the American giant follow one after another.

As a technology giant, Meta has a large number of teams, more or less large, responsible for various aspects of day-to-day business. They are in all branches of the company. Menlo Park had a Responsible Innovation team, a group tasked with responding to the “potential societal harm”caused by Facebook products. It no longer exists, it was “disbanded”, according to The Wall Street Journal.

A spokesman for Meta told the newspaper that the company remains “committed to the goals of this team, but did not give a reason for this change in strategy.

The Responsible Innovation Group was formed several years ago, according to a blog post published in 2021 by Margaret Stewart, the Facebook vice president in charge of the team. It was made up of engineers and individuals with a background in civil rights and ethics who advised the giant’s development teams on “the harm that could be done across a very wide range of societal issues and dilemmas,”she wrote last year. According to The Journal, Zvika Krieger, who led the team, left the company a few months ago.

The Responsible Innovation Team is not the only team that has recently been revamped. A few weeks ago, Meta reorganized its entire team around AI, in particular by integrating its Responsible IA group into the Social Impact team. The Menlo Park firm also sought to cut costs to cope with the first drop in revenue in its history, closed some projects in its Reality Labs division and slowed recruitment.
