When changing phones, one practical aspect to consider is the format of the SIM card. If the current SIM card is not compatible with the device, order another one or cut it out. A SIM card is a microcircuit containing a microcontroller and memory. It is used to store information related to the mobile network subscriber – in this case, the IMSI number, consisting of the country code, carrier ID and subscriber ID -. It also allows the storage of data and applications of the user, its operator or, in some cases, third parties.
It has evolved over time. For a long time there was only one format, but today there are three: standard or mini-SIM, micro-SIM and nano-SIM. And these formats are not compatible with all smartphones. The latest devices work with nano, the oldest or simplest require mini or micro. When you order a SIM card, you are asked to specify the desired format. It may happen to be wrong. What to do then?
Is it possible to cut a SIM card? How to do?
You should know that cutting a SIM card, switching from microformat to nanoformat is quite possible. However, the operation is irreversible and care must be taken not to damage the chip.
So, if you have a SIM card that is not compatible with your phone, you can either order a new card in the correct format or cut your own. Please note that more and more carriers offer two or even three SIM cards in one (micro/nano or even mini/micro/nano). It is then sufficient to remove the appropriate support to obtain the desired format. Free Mobile, for its part, also offers swappable SIMs that allow you to switch from mini-SIM to micro-SIM and vice versa. Operators also offer triple-cut cards in three formats. In Free Mobile, this option currently only exists in Reunion.
What’s the best option?
To cut a SIM card, there are two options. You can go not to your operator’s store, which will most often force you to order a new card – a paid operation, about 10 euros, but to a repair shop. Most offer a service, sometimes even for free. Another option is to perform the operation yourself. The easiest way to do this is to invest in a small specialized machine, a SIM card cutter, which looks a lot like a hole puncher. All you have to do is set up the correct format, insert your SIM card and you’re done.
You can also, if you have the hands and equipment, use a pattern – you can easily find them online – and cut out the support yourself. We repeat, the operation is not without risk, you can damage your chip. Better through your carrier. Once the new SIM is in place in your phone, don’t forget to activate it or you won’t be able to use it.
PS: Some smartphones now have the eSIM function. This is an electronic SIM card, only a software one, which is activated on the phone through the application. This can be very practical, especially for foreigners.
