Netflix and Sennheiser offer unique surround sound

Netflix and Sennheiser offer unparalleled spatial audio to further immerse you in your favorite content.

When watching video content, and even more so if it’s a long format like a TV series or a movie, sound is a very important component of the experience, helping you to be completely immersed and feel indebted to the slightest scene. In this regard, technology has made tremendous progress, especially with the advent of spatial sound. Today, Netflix and Sennheiser are teaming up to deliver a unique space experience.

Netflix and Sennheiser offer unique surround sound

Netflix and Sennheiser announced that Netflix users can enjoy surround sound with Sennheiser AMBEO technology, regardless of the device they use, regardless of the speakers they have.

Of course, hardware is still important when it comes to the quality of sound reaching your ears, but that means any speaker or headphones can offer a form of surround sound. AMBEO combines both spatiality and Sennheiser sound reproduction.

Sound rendering is an important concept to understand here. The idea is to “render”(calculate) an audio signal in the same way that, for example, a graphics card computes a synthetic 3D image. Old spatial processing technologies used different sound recordings to play them in different channels (front, back, left, right, etc.). This is where audio rendering calculates the audio signal your ears should receive.

Only a handful of Netflix content currently supports Spatial Audio, but users may find “compatible titles”with 5.1 or ATMOS icons. There is also a dedicated help page.

Spatial sound greatly enhances the overall experience, so this is a very good addition to the platform. Let’s hope that the list of compatible content will grow quickly and all new games will be supported. Can we even hope that the entire catalog will benefit from this?
