Netflix: From Patron to Grand Patron of the French Cinematheque

Cinémathèque française will assist streaming platform Netflix in its mission to promote the film heritage and help spread it to as many people as possible for three years.

A true crossroads for cinephiles, La Cinémathèque française regularly restores films from all eras, all walks of life and all genres, such as Napoleon vs. Abel Hans, a masterpiece of cinematic heritage over five hours long, released in 1927. a titanic project that would not have been possible without the financial help of Netflix as a patron. This collaboration also began in 2018, when after a presentation at the Venice Film Festival in the Great Hall of Henri Langlois, Orson Welles’ finally completed film The Other Side of the Wind was screened. In 2019, it continued with occasional master classes and exceptional previews.

In December 2021, a private organization is offering a selection of Netflix films from great directors such as Jane Campion, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sam Levinson, Cornel Mundrucho or Paolo Sorrentino. More than a year later, Netflix decided to become a major sponsor of the Cinemathèque Française, with the aim of expanding its ability to provide a wide audience with privileged access to major international directors and actors and to impart a taste for cinema to a younger generation.

Many Cinemathèque Français events are supported by Netflix.

  • Film programming, accompanying retrospectives with workshops, previews, meetings…
  • Festival Tout la Mémoire du Monde (March 8-12, 2023) as an official partner, also by screening films from the catalog.
  • Temporary exhibitions through, among other things, the creation of thematic collections of films on Netflix. After Romy Schneider and Top Secret, Film and Espionage (until May 21), Netflix will accompany Viva Varda! (October 11, 2023 – January 28, 2024) with Agnès Varda’s themed collection, which can be found online.
  • Sponsorship of one of the educational studios of the French Cinémathèque and organization of family screenings within the framework of Ma Petite Cinémathèque.
  • Cinemathèque Française collections by enriching objects, models, scripts, sets, costumes or Netflix film archives.

Anne-Gabriel Dauba-Pantanach, vice president of communications and public relations for Netflix France and Southern Europe, said:

We are pleased to strengthen our links with Cinémathèque française, which promotes French and international cinema. Through the richness of its programs and the diversity of our catalogue, we share this desire to make it easier for everyone to access films and find authors.
