Netflix: Speculators can now transfer their profile to a new account

Netflix is launching a profile transfer to a new account, which is an additional option to reduce password sharing.

Netflix makes it easy for scalpers to log out of your account so they don’t lose their history. Thus, when you are tired of having your account squatted, you can ask that so-and-so to restore his or her profile when he or she opens his or her own account.

Netflix launches profile transfer to new account

This feature is rolling out globally after initial testing in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. Profile transfer will be activated automatically in all countries except South Korea and the United States, where it will need to be activated in the settings.

You will receive an email when the profile transfer tool becomes available for your account. You will then be able to access the Profile Transfer option from the drop-down menu that appears when you hover over the profile icon on the main page. Then all you have to do is follow the instructions to set up your new account.

Netflix has confirmed to Engadget that it’s not possible to transfer a profile to an existing account. Therefore, the procedure is only possible if you are switching to a new account.

Additional option to reduce password sharing

The platform explains that this feature has been in demand for a long time, and the company offers it as a useful option for those who are making big changes in their lives, such as the end of a relationship or a child leaving the parental home…. That being said, Netflix is of course also looking to cut back on password sharing.

Last August, the streaming giant began charging users in five Latin American countries if they shared their account with users outside of their primary country of residence. This feature has been rolled out after a test run in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, which suggests it may arrive in more countries once the account migration rollout is complete. Then we might hear about users who got kicked out of their Netflix account because their friends or family didn’t want to pay extra.

Netflix takes account sharing very seriously, especially since the total number of subscribers has dropped for the first time this year. The platform lost about 1.2 million subscribers in the first half of 2022.

If you suddenly find yourself having to pay for your own Netflix account, you’ll soon have the option to upgrade your profile to a less expensive, ad-supported plan. Called Essential with pub, the latter will arrive on November 3rd at 5pm and will cost €5.99 per month. However, you’ll have to settle for 720p resolution with 4-5 minutes of ads per hour. Some content from the “regular”catalog will also be unavailable due to rights restrictions and offline downloads of the program will not be available.
