Apple’s new Apple TV 4K offering adds HRD10+ and Dolby Vision, increases default storage capacity, and only supports Ethernet on the more expensive model.
The new models cost $129 for 64GB of storage and Wi-Fi, or $149 for 128GB of storage and an Ethernet port. Previous models cost $179 for the 32GB model. Both new models are powered by the A15 Bionic, the chip that powers Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup, which should provide a boost in speed and responsiveness for Apple TV gamers. It also probably helps to enable the latest output options: HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and the now typical Dolby Atmos, 7.1 and 5.1 audio arrays.
Apple is sticking with a much-improved silver-aluminum remote that’s much easier to use with your fingers and find on the couch than the previous black glass touchpad model. This third-generation remote is USB-C charged, replacing the Lightning connection on the previous model. Unfortunately, Apple still hasn’t implemented the “Find Me”feature in the remote control and doesn’t offer the remote to make a sound to help you find it.
Notably, the two Apple TV 4K offerings have some significant differences beyond memory. The more expensive model is the only one that offers an Ethernet port, and also the only one that will work as an edge router with Thread’s smart home accessories.
The Apple TV 4K goes on sale November 4th and you can pre-order it now. We will be adding information as we learn more about this newly announced product.
