Overwatch 2 is the sequel to the fairly popular hero shooter Overwatch, and it’s definitely improved in many ways. While the characters have been updated quite a bit, other game mechanics have also been changed. Whether you’re a veteran or a new player, Overwatch 2’s ranks and divisions can get a little confusing. Blizzard abandoned the iconic match-by-match ranking update and switched to a new system. Now this can be confusing for anyone and that is why we made this guide. In this guide, we will explain the whole ranking system in Overwatch 2. So, let’s check out this guide and this time we will understand the competitive scenario.

While players are used to getting updates to their ranks and divisions match by match, this will not be the case in the sequel. Blizzard hopes this change will bring consistency to skill upgrades during a match.
To first determine the rank and division you’ll be placed in, you’ll either need to win seven matches or lose twenty matches. They will determine where you will be in the rankings for the first time, and then they will determine how you will move up or down in your rankings.
Each rank consists of five divisions that you need to cover before you end up in the top 500 players. Here are all the Overwatch 2 ranks in order:
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Master
- Grandmaster
At the end of the season, you’ll earn Competitive Points based on ranks and divisions in Overwatch 2.
How to team up with friends in a ranked match
With the new system, teaming up with friends in a competitive environment will depend on the rank and division of both. Here’s how the rank system works when paired with friends in Overwatch 2:
- From bronze to diamond levels, players can team up with friends within two levels. For example, a platinum player can team up with a silver player.
- For players with the Master rank, you can only team up with friends within the same level. That is, you can mate with either Diamond or Grandmaster. However, together with the grandmaster, your division also comes into play.
- Grandmasters can only unite within three divisions. If you want to team up with someone at the Master level, your division must be GM 5 and his division must be between Master 1-3.
- Top 500 players can only team up with other top 500 players in the region.
That’s all there is in the Overwatch 2 ranking system with all ranks in order. While you’re here, be sure to check out our Overwatch 2 guides for more.
