Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoCs Announced: Specifications and Everything You Need to Know

Qualcomm has announced two new mobile platforms. The company launched the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC along with the new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. The SoC 8+ Gen 1 is the more premium and powerful offering among the two. It is the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that was introduced late last year.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC offers a suite of high-end, sought-after features and technologies. According to Qualcomm, this provided “epic mobile gaming, high-speed connectivity, smart entertainment, and larger-than-life capture.”Let’s take a look at the newly released Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, features and details of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC.

Characteristics of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 single-chip system

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC is the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It has some minor improvements over its predecessor. Qualcomm claims that the new flagship chipset offers a 10% boost in CPU and GPU performance while reducing power consumption by 30%. This should result in an additional 60 minutes of smooth gameplay. The octa-core chipset has a peak clock speed of 3.2GHz.

The chipset supports the latest Snapdragon Sight technologies such as 8K HDR video recording, 200MP image capture or 108MP video recording with a single camera at 30fps with zero shutter lag.

The flagship 5G processor is also reported to deliver 20% faster AI-related performance thanks to the new 7th generation Qualcomm AI Engine. With the X65 5G modem, the chipset supports both sub-6GHz and 5G millimeter wave. It also supports WiFi 6, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, etc.

Companies such as Xiaomi, Realme, Asus, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, iQOO, Honor, Asus and others will release smartphones with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC starting from the third quarter of 2022.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC

Qualcomm says the new 7-series chip offers high-end, sought-after features. The new chipset supports some Snapdragon Elite Gaming features such as the Adreno Frame Motion Engine to double the frame rate while maintaining the same power consumption.

The chipset has a peak clock speed of 2.4 GHz. The new and improved GPU also offers 20% faster graphics rendering. Qualcomm said the new Snapdragon 7 series chipset also supports Qualcomm Spectra triple ISP, allowing users to capture up to three cameras at the same time or click 200-megapixel images.

The chipset supports 5G and has a 4th generation X62 modem. Companies such as Oppo, Xiaomi and Honor have already confirmed the release of new smartphones with SoC Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.

Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform

Qualcomm also introduced its new Snapdragon XR2 platform alongside new mobile platforms. The company has unveiled its new AR glass based on the new XR2 platform. The new version is completely wireless and 40 percent thinner. It has two 0.49-inch micro-OLED displays with 90Hz refresh rate support.

The glass is also equipped with two 6DoF tracking cameras and one RGB camera. Despite all this hardware, AR Glass only weighs 115 grams.

To achieve a truly immersive augmented reality experience, the device provides a sub-3ms latency between the smartphone and the augmented reality glass. The new glass also supports Wi-Fi 6/6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
