Body tracking in preparation for Oculus Quest? Unless this feature is reserved for the future Quest Pro.
On some VR headsets, you can only follow head movement, which is technically easier because the headset is worn over the head. Other devices such as Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 can go even further, such as tracking the movement of your hands and fingers by integrating grayscale wide-angle cameras.
Body tracking in preparation for Oculus Quest 2?
That being said, it looks like a future update might bring body tracking to the headset. At least that’s what the UploadVR report says. The blog found a screenshot on the Quest 2 Developer Blog that shows body tracking is an option the developers may offer users in the future.
Unless this feature is reserved for the future Quest Pro.
The screenshot in question has since been deleted, but its discovery has sparked a lot of discussion and speculation, especially about its implications for the device itself. UploadVR suggests that this body-tracking feature may not be required for the Quest 2, but rather a device codenamed Project Cambria, a headset that will officially be called the Quest Pro and will come with more sensors to track eye movements and even face movements.
Indeed, the placement of the Quest 2’s cameras, including body tracking, wouldn’t be really practical or useful. That being said, a headset that could do all of that would be really good. In any case, we will have to wait to see if this discovery is proven and what it can bring to the user. Patience!
