New Overwatch 2 characters placed behind the battle pass?
βIn addition to some of the information previously posted about our Overwatch 2 Battle Pass, we will share the full details prior to launch, but we want to confirm that new Overwatch 2 heroes will be available on the free Battle Pass track,β the Director explained. and Overwatch VP John Spector on Twitter. Blizzard intends to add three to four heroes each year after launch.
John Spector was referring to the battle pass details being released too soon. This rumor also indicated that the next support was called Kiriko. According to Reset Era, the description of the Watchpoint Pack, which includes access to Overwatch and a range of in-game benefits, states that those who purchase the Premium Battle Pass will “automatically have access to the latest version of Overwatch.”Hero Kiriko. This description has since been changed and no longer contains this detail.
Details are still thin
It’s not uncommon in free games to place new characters behind paywalls in this way, or at least not make them immediately available to everyone. For example, Valorant and Apex Legends use this approach.
However, this represents a significant change for Overwatch. Blizzard offered all of its characters to all players at the same time in the first game. Players can freely switch characters mid-game to react to enemy compositions, which is not possible in Apex or Valorant. The new heroes are also too strong at first. Junker Queen, for example, dominated Overwatch League debate in the weeks following its introduction for exactly this reason – this season the league moved to an early version of Overwatch 2.
Blizzard will reveal more details soon.
Placing new heroes behind the Battle Pass progress means those who don’t have time to play to unlock them will be at a disadvantage. It’s not clear if players will be able to pay to progress in this battle pass like they can in Fortnite or Fall Guys, but it looks like those who buy premium will get instant access to at least one of these new characters.
Blizzard will reveal more details about the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass and these new faces in the coming weeks. The game will release on October 4th.
