Sony PlayStation mobile controller patent suggests it may be in the works

Japanese video game giant Sony may be working on a PlayStation controller for mobile devices, a new patent filed by the company reveals. First spotted by VGC, the device appears to be a PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller rather than the new PlayStation 5 DualSense controller. The patent has blueprints for the controller and is described as “left grip and right grip, left and right handed user”which suggests that the controller will have two separate parts that fit on both sides. smartphone. Sony PlayStation 4 Mobile Controller Details

Basically, Sony seems to have taken the design of the DualShock 4 controller and split it in half. Because mobile phones won’t need a touch area in the center of the controller, the company is using that area to house the phone. The left and right sides will fit either side of the smartphone, though it’s not clear if the controllers use USB Type-C to connect to the phone, or if it uses some sort of NFC or other connection.

It’s worth noting that Sony PlayStation controllers can already connect to mobile phones using Bluetooth, so this version should ideally be suitable for something with lower latency.

It also makes sense since many PlayStation games can be played on mobile phones using Remote Play. The company has also taken mobile gaming more seriously recently, hiring Apple Arcade’s Nicola Sebastiani in October to lead its own mobile gaming development. PlayStation head Jim Ryan also said the company plans to release an “iconic IP”for mobile phones by March 2022.

After last year’s pandemic, mobile gaming has grown significantly, with more and more users spending time at home. Perhaps this is what prompted companies such as Sony, Microsoft and others to also take this area seriously. While third-party mobile controllers are available for Xbox and PS games right now, Sony and Microsoft may introduce new features and improve the gaming experience on smartphones.
