Qualcomm recently upgraded its flagship mobile platform Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC with the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm’s new chipset for flagship Android smartphones delivers up to 10% CPU and GPU improvements and up to 30% efficiency improvements. Like its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC is also based on a 4nm process. Smartphones with the new flagship chipset will go on sale in the coming days.
A new report claims that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC is already in development. Its launch is scheduled for the end of this year. Some key features of the upcoming Snapdragon flagship SoC have also been leaked online. Let’s take a look at the specs, features and other details of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC currently known.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC specs leaked online
Qualcomm is expected to announce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC in December. Ahead of the official launch, some details have been leaked. According to a source at Digital Chat Station, the Snapdragon Gen 2 flagship SoC will feature a unique cluster setup. The SoC has a model number of SM8550.
Digital Chat Station claims that the Gen 2 variant will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and will continue to be based on the 4nm process. While the manufacturer will remain the same as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, the tipster claims that the upcoming SoC will have a different cluster configuration.
SoC Gen 2 will have a 1+2+2+3 configuration, as opposed to the 1+3+4 configuration in the current lineup. It will have one Makalu generation core, another cluster with two Makalu generation cores, followed by two Matterhorn cores and three Klein R1 cores. The Makalu core could be the upcoming Prime X3 core, while the Makalu refers to the 2022 Cortex processors. This means the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC could have a Cortex-X3 core, two Cortex-A720 cores, two Cortex-A720 cores, and three low-power Cortex-A510 cores. CPU cores can be paired with an Adreno 740 GPU.
Smartphones with the new flagship Gen 2 SoC are likely to debut later this year. Like every year, we can expect Xiaomi to be one of the first to launch its next generation flagship smartphones with the new high-end Snapdragon chipset.
