Introducing the Infinix Thunder Charge 180W

Infinix introduces 180W Thunder Charge, a relatively simple yet highly effective system.

With our smartphone batteries being more or less limited to 5,000mAh for size and manufacturing reasons, the only lever available to smartphone manufacturers is to offer faster charging. This is what many are doing today, including Infinix. Here is his latest innovation.

Infinix introduces 180W Thunder Charge

If you’re a regular reader, you might know that last year Infinix showed off their 160W fast charger with a concept phone. Thunder Charge is even better and more efficient. According to the company, this new system is 99% efficient, which means that less energy is generated when running at such an impressive power level.

The trick is to use two batteries that can be charged at 90W. Thus, charging two batteries in parallel is similar to one battery being charged at 180W. from Chinese manufacturers.

Relatively simple but very effective system

To take advantage of this ultra-fast charging, you need a quality USB-C cable, and Infinix allows you to manage all this through a microchip built right into the cable. This is very similar to what Apple does, so the method is verified. Let’s hope these cables aren’t too expensive. We know, for example, that according to some analysts, these microchips are currently allowing Apple to make huge profits.

If you don’t have a certified cable, this charging system will look like the USB-PD standard, limited to “only”60 or 100 watts.

Of course, such ultra-fast charging will generate heat, and Infinix explains that it has implemented at least 20 sensors and software to constantly monitor temperatures and prevent overheating. This system will keep everything at a relatively low temperature of 43°C to ensure a good balance between charging speed and durability.

The good news is that Thunder Charge should be integrated into commercial smartphones from the second half of 2022.
