The Dark Sky app owned by Apple has been removed from the App Store ahead of schedule.

The Dark Sky weather app is no longer on Apple’s App Store, suggesting it was removed early after the iPhone manufacturer acquired it in March 2020.

  • What is happening? Dark Sky for iOS is no longer available for download.
  • Why care? You will need to find yourself another favorite weather app.
  • What to do? Do not delete the app from your device if you want to continue using it before it completely stops working by the end of 2022.

Apple removes Dark Sky from the App Store

When an app is removed, its App Store link no longer works.

People can no longer download Dark Sky on their iPhones, but people who already have it on their device can continue to use it. Just don’t manually uninstall the app and change to another iPhone set up as new because you won’t be able to redownload it.

The team has previously stated that Dark Sky will stop operating after December 31, 2022.

According to the Dark Sky blog, deleting an app from the App Store also means the main service will stop working. However, at the time of this writing, my copy of Dark Sky is happy to provide various weather data. We assume that the main Dark Sky service will also stop working soon.

The developers have previously stated that the Dark Sky API and website will be available until March 31, 2023. Developers using the Dark Sky API can migrate to Apple’s WeatherKit API. Apple acquired the app in March 2020, removing the Android version from the Google Play store less than six months later.

Why people loved Dark Sky

Dark Sky is considered one of the best weather apps for mobile devices. He popularized hyperlocal weather forecasting. Instead of being limited to a standard weather forecast, Dark Sky will inform you about the local weather conditions at your current location and notify you if a major storm or rain is coming your way.

Over time, Apple has updated and enhanced its own Weather app with some of the most popular features borrowed from the Dark Sky software.

For example, the Apple Weather app supports hyper-local weather forecasting thanks to Dark Sky. And in iOS 16, you can set up alerts for bad weather near you. And now you can touch any module in the app to get a more detailed overview of the data, such as hourly temperature and precipitation for the next 10 days.

And with iPadOS 16.1, for the first time, your iPad will ship with a full-featured weather app out of the box that takes full advantage of the tablet’s large display.
