HBO Max is updating its Apple TV app. This should bring the most benefit.
HBO is continuing its initiative to update its apps for connected TVs. Variety and The Verge today report that WarnerMedia is releasing a new version of its HBO Max app for Apple TV that fixes some of the biggest issues to date.
HBO Max updates its Apple TV app
First of all, this version is built on a more modern platform that should be much more robust than the old HBO Go/Now framework. Users should also see a new home page with a scrollable “hero”banner, the ability to spend credits, more control over My Stuff lists, and a simplified login system.
This new version should roll out to all Apple TVs in the coming days. This structure is already used in many other HBO Max apps, including those for Android, PlayStation, Roku, and some LG, Samsung, and Vizio TVs. The same redesign is still expected for Amazon Fire TV devices as well as the web version.
This should bring the most benefit.
This most wobbly Apple TV client is the result of WarnerMedia’s desire to rush the launch of HBO Max. Instead of developing its Smart TV apps from scratch, the company decided to start with the HBO Go and HBO Now apps to save development time. Knowing that he must make such an update to modernize everything and maintain the internationalization of his services, as well as the maximum diversity of content. At least that’s what WarnerMedia vice president Sarah Lyons said.
The result of the operation, a solution that did not help HBO Max grow normally at all. JustWatch estimates that the service accounted for just 7% of the global streaming market share in February, compared to 17.6% for Disney+. While the rollout of this new version shouldn’t lead to an instant surge in numbers, it should at least help HBO retain its subscribers who would otherwise likely end up looking elsewhere.
