In addition to the iPhone, Apple’s self-service program now provides genuine parts and manuals for those looking to fix their broken MacBook Air or Pro themselves.
- What is happening? Apple has extended its self-service program to silicon models of the Apple MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with the M1 processor.
- Why care? Well, now you can get genuine Apple parts to service your broken Mac laptop, and you can also download helpful Apple repair guides.
- What to do? If you’re a DIYer with basic repair skills, you’ll probably want to get your own Apple laptop repaired. To everyone else, please take your broken laptop to an authorized repair shop to have it repaired.
Apple Self-Service Program Adds MacBook Air and Pro
Apple launched the iPhone self-service program in April 2022, and the initiative is now extended to the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with the M1 processor.
Additional Mac models will be included in the program later this year. Mac laptops with an M2 processor are currently excluded from the self-service program.
US residents will be able to purchase original parts and tools on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at the company’s self-service repair shop. At launch, available parts will include a display and top case with battery and trackpad.
Additional details will be available for purchase soon.
You can also send replacement parts back to Apple for refurbishment and recycling. Depending on the condition of the replaced component, you may also be eligible for a credit to purchase parts.
Say hello to another (huge) rental kit
When the self-service program debuted, Apple offered customers a $49/week repair kit that comes in two boxes on wheels and weighs 79 pounds. And now Apple will also offer a repair kit to repair the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
Available for the same $49/week as the iPhone Repair Kit, it will ship for free and will include everything you need to do your own MacBook repair.
You can start the self-repair process and also download the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro repair guide at support.apple.com/self-service-repair.
Should I repair my MacBook myself or not?
Just because Apple lets you service your Mac laptop with genuine parts doesn’t mean you have to fix your MacBook Air or Pro yourself.
“For the vast majority of customers who do not have experience repairing electronic devices, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair,”according to an announcement published in Apple Newsroom .. .
The Self-Service Program is currently limited to customers in the United States.
But that will change later this year when Apple launches the program in Europe and other regions and countries.
