Razer, Qualcomm and Verizon are working together on a portable 5G console. The carrier teased a device called the Razer Edge 5G during Mobile World Congress in Las Vegas. There are very few details yet, but we already know that the console will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 chip.

Announced last December, this chip features an Adreno GPU capable of running Android games at 144fps and native support for 10-bit HDR. In addition, it offers 5G and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity through the company’s FastConnect 6900 system.

The Razer Edge 5G could be very interesting in this young market.

Late last year, Qualcomm and Razer released a development kit designed to showcase the capabilities of the G3X platform. The device features a 6.65-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, quad speakers and of course controls. If we had to guess, we’d bet the Razer Edge 5G would be very similar to this prototype. In a teaser released today, Razer showed off enough of its Edge 5G’s capabilities to reveal a far superior design than the latest Edge-branded Razer.

This Android console can play games locally as well as stream directly from the cloud and home consoles, according to Verizon. This will put the Razer Edge 5G between the Logitech G Cloud Gaming Handheld and the Valve Steam Deck. The first is a device designed for cloud gaming, and it costs $350, which is a pretty high price for extremely limited features. Steam Deck is more expensive but can run games like Elden Ring, Stray and Hades. And if you already have these games on Steam, you don’t have to pay for them again. The Steam Deck doesn’t have 5G connectivity, however, and that could make the Razer Edge 5G stand out when it hits the market.

Razer, Qualcomm, and Verizon have promised to share more information about their collaboration on October 15 during RazerCon.
