Kok3shi Developer Launches Ayakurume, Another Checkm8 Based iOS 15 Jailbreak for Developers

Sakura development team member @dora2ios, perhaps best known for his involvement in the development of the kok3shi jailbreak, has released a new developer-focused jailbreak tool called ayakurume for iOS 15 that uses the same checkm8 bootrom hardware exploit as the venerable jailbreak tool. checkra1n.

According to the project’s GitHub page (translated into English using Google Translate), ayakurum currently only supports iPhone 6s (specifically iPhone 8.1/N71AP model) running iOS 15.7.1, but since the project is under development, we can only speculate that there may be plans to support other checkm8 compatible devices and firmware combinations in the future.

The GitHub page notes that the jailbreak uses the Procursus bootloader with the Sileo package manager and requires the device to have 32 GB of internal memory or more, and also requires 5 GB of free space, since the jailbreak duplicates rootFS.

The duplicated root filesystem, which the developer called fakefs, allows read and write access.

The ayakuruke jailbreak tool joins Palera1n to become the second checkm8-based public jailbreak tool for iOS 15, but it’s worth noting that Palera1n supports more combinations of devices and ROMs, and even supports injecting tweaks on iOS 15.3.5 and below.

Interestingly, the ayakurume GitHub page also mentions support for implementing tweaks, albeit with support for much newer firmware.

Security researcher Linus Henze today released the Fugu15 jailbreak for arm64e devices (A12 and later) running iOS 15.0-15.4.1, so it’s interesting to see @dora2ios release ayakurume.

Since ayakurume is intended for developers, it is not recommended to install it as a regular user. Instead, those waiting for the iOS and iPadOS 15 jailbreak to be published should continue to wait for the lowest possible firmware and take comfort in the fact that the continuous string of developer-focused iOS and iPadOS 15 jailbreak releases could bring us one step closer to a full jailbreak for all users.
