A developer manages to install CarPlay in his Tesla thanks to a Raspberry Pi with a modified version of Android!.
Tesla cars have a large screen for the infotainment system. This would be ideal support for platforms like Apple CarPlay or Google Android Auto. However, CarPlay is not supported by Tesla and, admittedly, it would be rather surprising if the manufacturer offered such an option to its customers. But that didn’t stop the developer from going on an adventure.

Polish developer Michal Gapinski thought instead of waiting to see if Tesla wanted to integrate CarPlay support into their cars, it would be more fun to do it yourself. And interestingly, Michal Gapinski managed to make it all work using a Raspberry Pi running a modified version of Android. In a way, it’s rather ironic that this workaround uses non-Apple products and services.

In any case, if the result is expected, namely Apple CarPlay, which works perfectly on Tesla, the installation is far from ideal. The project is still in its infancy. Currently, the main limitation of the system is that you have to use a mouse connected to the Raspberry Pi to navigate the CarPlay interface, which ultimately negates all the interest of CarPlay, which is meant to be a touchscreen infotainment system for the car.
However, the good news, according to Michal Gapinsky, is that the developer has decided to publish his method as soon as it polishes a bit. It’s impossible to know when this will happen, but it could all be very interesting for Tesla owners who have an iPhone and like to tinker. We also hope that the brand will eventually make its vehicles compatible with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto, which would be a good thing.
