Roku may soon enter the home automation market

Roku is gearing up to enter the home automation market with light bulbs, cameras, sockets and dedicated apps.

The market for home automation, or more generally connected objects, whatever they are, is booming. While there are already a few well-established heavyweights, there is still room for others. And maybe one for Roku. At least that’s what the TV streaming expert thinks.

Roku is about to enter the home automation market

Roku does, according to a post by a Reddit user and a report by Zatz Not Funny, want to enter the connected home market with connected light bulbs, light bars and other security cameras. The products will be offered under the Wyze white label, and it also looks like Roku is currently working on a Smart Home channel and a dedicated mobile app.

The images, apparently taken from the Walmart website, show white and colored Roku smart bulbs, a Roku light bar, a Roku smart plug, indoor and outdoor Roku security cameras. These products look exactly like Wyze Cam v3, Cam Pan V2 and other brand products.

With light bulbs, cameras, sockets and special applications

Through TV and smartphone apps, Roku can allow its users to view and control live feeds from cameras, light bulbs, connected outlets, and more. Prices for these accessories are not mentioned, but a Wyze product like the Cam Pan V2 costs $34, and a colored light bulb is $23, which is much more affordable than, for example, what Nest or Philips offer. That being said, Wyze has recently caused a lot of controversy for failing to fix security flaws in its cameras in a timely manner. In December 2019, the company suffered a data breach that exposed information on 2.4 million customers.
