And in this top, we find a certain number of free games, since Steam has taken into account microtransactions and other paid extensions in its calculations. The Platinum category is dominated by games that everyone is familiar with, we’re talking about Apex Legends, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dead by Daylight, Destiny 2, Rainbow Six Siege, Dota 2 and Grand Theft Auto V.

Dota 2, CS:GO and GTA V are featured in this category for the sixth year in a row. PUBG and Rainbow Six Siege are entering their fifth year of existence. On the other hand, Destiny 2 has been featured in the Platinum category every year since its release on Steam in 2019.

New World makes a grand entrance

Battle Royale Naraka: Bladepoint and Battlefield 2042 are among the four releases this year that made the top 12. Valheim, a sandbox survival game created by just five people, is also among the top-grossing ones, as is New World, which shows that after years of searching, Amazon seems to have finally found the right recipe.

Newcomers to the second group of 12 games, Gold, are FIFA 22, Back 4 Blood, Forza Horizon 5, and It Takes Two, which won Game of the Year at the Game Awards. There are also older games like Final Fantasy XIV Online (which Square Enix has temporarily stopped selling due to server overload), Red Dead Redemption 2, Rust, Sea of Thieves, Warframe, The Elder Scrolls Online, War Thunder and Forza. Horizon 4.

The Silver section features 2021 games. Such is the case with Halo Infinite, Outriders, Resident Evil Village and Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Cyberpunk 2077, which launched last December, is also in this category, as are The Sims 4, Monster Hunter: World, and Tom Fortress 2.

Notable facts include the fact that EA, which offered its games on Steam in 2019, has four titles out of the top 24, including three new titles (Apex Legends, Battlefield 2042, FIFA 22 and It Takes Two). Microsoft also places several games in the top basket despite their presence in PC Game Pass. Forza Horizon 5, its predecessor, and Sea of Thieves are in the Gold category. Halo Infinite is in the Silver category, although the multiplayer is free and the paid campaign was only available a week before the numbers closed on Steam.

Most of these games, including New World, Battlefield 2042, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, and Sea of Thieves, were also offered at special prices in the Steam Winter Sale. Cyberpunk 2077, Valheim and Back 4 Blood, by the way, will be on sale until January 5, 2022.
