Samsung has unveiled its latest line of NVMe SSDs, the SSD 990 Pro line. The company claims that these SSDs are capable of almost the fastest speeds, according to the theory for a PCIe 4.0 interface – PCI 5.0 SSDs will be much faster. The South Korean giant hopes it can deliver better performance for PC and console gaming, 4K and 8K content, and anything that consumes a lot of data.

The 990 Pro SSDs provide read and write speeds up to 7450MB/s and 6900MB/s respectively. The 980 Pro line was content with speeds of 7000 MB/s and 5100 MB/s, while random read and write speeds of the 990 Pro reach 1400K and 1550K IOPS, according to Samsung. The company also explains that this is 55% more than the 980 Pro.
Improvements in reading, writing and energy management
In addition, Samsung claims that its 990 Pro will be more efficient than the previous generation, with up to a 50% boost. These SSDs feature a completely redesigned nickel-plated controller as well as a power dissipator for better heat dissipation. The 990 Pro also features Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard technology to help maintain optimal temperatures. This is a heatsink version that provides external thermal management as well as RGB lighting, which can make it the perfect accessory if you want to integrate it into a PlayStation 5, for example.
What can really do better than the very successful 980 Pro?
The 980 Pro’s SSDs are some of the best, especially when integrated into the PS5. Let’s hope the 990 Pro performs better with faster speeds and better power management. Samsung will start shipping its 990 Pro line in October. Count $179 for the 1TB model and $309 for the 2TB version. The South Korean giant should also offer a 4TB version next year.
