Nearly twenty years before Facebook and many other tech companies started talking about metaverses, Second Life allowed millions of users to travel through virtual worlds. Today, after so much time, its developer Linden Labs announces that it is developing a mobile version of the game. The first beta version should appear in the coming days.

In a YouTube video posted on the Second Life community forums, the publisher shared some details about the mobile app. This one is developed with the Unity engine. In other words, it should be easy to develop and distribute a game on Android smartphones and tablets like iOS. The studio also revealed some previews of the characters and environments, as well as how Linden Labs worked to make the game as close to a board game as possible.
Today, Facebook is struggling to launch the metaverse, but to date, 73 million accounts have been created in Second Life, and at least 900,000 users have been active daily during the pandemic, 17 years after the game launched. events include “live concerts, sales, fan gatherings, book and poetry readings, academic lectures, fashion shows and art exhibitions,”Vice reported in 2020.

Linden Labs was working on a VR version of their game called Sansar, but the studio stopped development and sold the rights in 2020. that the introduction of virtual reality headsets has not happened as quickly as we would like.
