Until a few years ago, musicians who wanted to offer them to the general public had only one, or nearly one, way to do so. You had to sign a record deal to record, produce and distribute their music. Today, thanks to affordable technology, artists can record, produce, promote and sell their creations themselves. Some are not shy. Kanye West chooses this option for his next album.

With these modern tools, artists have more control over their songs. This allows them, in particular, to make more profits, since most of the income received from sales goes to them, and not to the labels. Today, it’s no surprise that musicians are choosing new ways to distribute their work. Therefore, Kanye West is talking about him today. The American rapper, songwriter, artistic director, director and designer has announced that his next album, Donda 2, will be offered exclusively on Stem Player.

For those who don’t know, Stem Player is a portable music player. It’s even more so as the device has controls to allow the user to manipulate certain elements of the song during playback. This allows, to a certain extent, to remix songs on the fly, without additional hardware or software.
The Stem Player also has a USB-C port, Bluetooth compatibility, and a plug. There are also built-in speakers to listen to music directly if you like. Sure, it’s an interesting device, but it’s hard to imagine that Kanye West fans would shell out $200 to buy a Stem Player and be able to listen to this album. If more artists and songs were possible it might make sense, but as it stands it’s a rather odd decision. To be continued!
