Samsung may ditch its own Exynos chip for its next Galaxy S and rely solely on Qualcomm.
The next generation of Samsung Galaxy S smartphones could mark the end of an era. According to the always well-informed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the South Korean giant will turn exclusively to Qualcomm for processors for its next Galaxy S. This would mark a significant change in Samsung’s strategy. In recent years, the company has used Qualcomm Snapdragon chips and its own Exynos chips for its high-end smartphones.

And the actual chip you had in your device depended (mostly) on the country you live in. In the United States, the Galaxy S and Note exclusively used Qualcomm chips, to the delight of buyers in Europe and Asia. Indeed, in almost every situation in the past where Samsung has offered Snapdragon and Exynos variants, the former has either performed better in terms of performance than Samsung’s own chip or offered longer battery life. Qualcomm processors also tend to be more stable when it comes to apps and games.

Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that it has become very difficult if not impossible for Samsung to ignore this reality: many moments,” he tweeted, referring to chips from Samsung and Qualcomm for the next flagships. Ming-Chi Kuo adds that this decision will further solidify Qualcomm’s dominance in the Android market.
As for understanding what implications this could have for the future of the Exynos brand, that’s a different story. The company has been working with AMD for years to design and build the Exynos 220 chip for the Galaxy S22, and this chip suffers from the same issues as the previous ones. Last April, Samsung Mobile President T.M. Ro told employees that the company was working on a chip that would be “unique”to all Samsung smartphones, but did not go into detail about how the chips differ from existing exynos.
