Sony shipped 19.3 million PlayStation 5 units according to financial report

Sony has just announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, and it details that the PlayStation 5 has shipped 19.3 million units to date. Of the 19.3 million devices shipped, 2 million came in the last quarter.

The PlayStation 4 has also fared well, with Sony reporting that the latest generation of the console has shipped 117.2 million units to date, making it one of the most successful consoles in Sony’s history.

Sony is also predicting a positive impact from increased sales of its own games in fiscal 2022. Although the company also predicts an increase in expenses, mainly for the development of gaming software in existing studios.

Despite the strong performance of the PlayStation 5, Twinfinite reports that the 11.5 million PS5 units shipped in the last fiscal year are well below the company’s initial projections in April 2021.

The PlayStation 5 has already shipped 19.3 million units since its inception, 11.5 million of them in the last fiscal year.

The PlayStation 5, despite its limited availability, remains as compelling a next-gen console as ever, and it’s only going to get even more attractive as more top-notch titles launch their long-awaited titles. Games like Santa Monica Studio’s upcoming God of War: Ragnarok and Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 should be the focus of SIE.

With the deal to acquire Bungie set to close in fiscal 2022, Sony is currently eyeing a Games as a Service model. Several of Sony’s own studios are currently working on live service multiplayer games, including the likes of Naughty Dog.

While SIE is actively working on live service multiplayer games, it also assured fans that they will continue to release storytelling-focused single-player games. This is reflected in the fact that many PlayStation Studios are working on large-scale single-player projects, such as the aforementioned God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel’s Wolverine.
