Sonic Origins: Four Opuses Remastered on Consoles and PC June 23

On June 23, Sonic Origins, a collection of four updated opuses from the cult franchise, will go on sale.

Some licenses are, so to speak, more iconic than others. Sonic, for example, has been able to cross the ages to still appeal to young and old alike today. Proof of this is the success of the recently released movie Sonic 2. And to take advantage of this marketing wave, Sega decided to offer fans of the world’s fastest blue hedgehog a new gift – Sonic Origins.

Forget movies and a lot of spin-offs, Sega knows you’re dying to (re-)play the franchise’s first 2D games, and the studio has exactly what you need in its boxes. The company has just announced the upcoming release of Sonic Origins. Starting June 23rd on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Switch, fans will be able to purchase the Standard Edition for $40 along with Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3, Knuckles and Sonic remasters. A CD or Digital Deluxe version that adds more challenging missions as well as music and various exclusive cosmetic items.

A collection of four updated parts of the cult franchise.

Each game also benefits from updated graphics, as well as a number of other “improvements”for modern hardware. You can play each of them the way they were originally designed – with the aspect ratio of the era, if you like – but you can also experience features and modes that are not unique and never existed on a Sega Genesis or Mega Drive. You can play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles in any of these games, and “Birthday Mode”adds a widescreen format with endless lives. You will also earn medallions to unlock content by completing the various missions on offer.

However, purists will surely regret the absence of a remaster of the Mega Drive 32X classic, namely Knuckles Chaotix. If you can get past that little gaffe, Sonic Origins remains the easiest way to give yourself a good dose of nostalgia and/or introduce your little ones to these iconic 16-bit platform games.
