Sonos is reportedly working on a speaker that can project sound in almost any direction.

Sonos is reportedly working on a new speaker capable of streaming in all directions, with significantly more RAM and flash storage. The real successor to the Sonos Five?

According to The Verge article, Sonos is currently working on a new high-end speaker that will take a new twist on existing models. A US site says it has seen images of a prototype speaker codenamed Optimo 2. If it retains its design, the speaker will offer a dual-angled chassis and be able to radiate sound in almost any direction, including upwards.

Sonos is reportedly working on a new speaker capable of broadcasting in all directions.

However, according to the images in question, the set will be as big as the Sonos Five, an old high-end model released in 2015 that received an update last year. When the time comes for its marketing, it will be offered in black or white.

With much more RAM and flash memory

According to sources at The Verge, this Optimo 2 speaker will have twice the RAM and eight times the flash storage of its predecessors, which could be indicative of Sonos’ desire to support it for several years, offering plenty of software updates – and host your future voice assistant? -. The speaker will also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, the latter currently only offered on the brand’s portable speakers. Sonos is also considering adding USB-C playback compatibility. While the Five has this feature, it does so via a standard 3.5mm jack rather than a USB-C port.

The real successor to the Sonos Five?

Judging by the capabilities of this column, it is quite possible that Optimo 2 could become the successor to the five. The US site also explains that this is only one of three new Sonos speakers in development, the rest being codenamed Optimo 1 and 1 SL. These other two models will be smaller and “SL”will be synonymous with “silent”. In other words, this option will be deprived of a microphone and, therefore, voice control.

Sonos has yet to confirm any of these rumors. When contacted about this, we will be sure to update this article if we have other information.
