Despite impressive sales, Nintendo expects its results to decline.
The sales growth of Nintendo Switch (83.4M), Nintendo Switch OLED (5.8M) and Nintendo Switch Lite (18.4M) showed a good balance between each of the three models, and thanks to the stable operation of the entire range of hardware, they reached 23. 06 million units during the financial year (€12.3 billion in sales, €4.3 billion in operating income and €3.4 billion in net income). Within five years, Nintendo’s hybrid console reached an installed base of 107.65 million.
In terms of games, of the games released during this period, Pokémon Sparkling Diamond and Pokémon Sparkling Pearl sold 14.65 million units, while Pokémon Legends: Arceus sold 12.64 million units, or over 10 million units each. In addition, Mario Party Superstars sold 6.88 million copies and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD sold 3.91 million copies.
Games released in previous years also continued to perform well, with Mario Kart8 Deluxe selling 9.94 million units (for cumulative sales of 45.33 million units) and Animal Crossing: New Horizons selling 6.01 million units (for cumulative sales of 38. 64 million units).
Sales of games from other publishers also increased, and combined with games released by Nintendo, a total of 39 titles were sold during this period, amounting to over one million units. As a result, sales rose 1.8% year on year to 235.07 million units, the highest annual sales of a Nintendo platform game to date. If COVID-19 interferes with production or transportation in the future, this may affect the supply of products.
Other unanticipated risks to the development and commercialization of products and services also continue to exist. In addition, production could be affected by barriers to the supply of parts, such as an increase in global demand for semiconductor components. Nintendo will take the necessary steps and continue its activities to create an environment in which consumers can continue to enjoy Nintendo products and services.
Nintendo Switch still attracting new players
Nintendo will continue to talk about the attractive potential of the three hardware models in order to maintain strong sales and expand the install base. Along with the release of Nintendo Switch Sports last April, Nintendo is looking to release Xenoblade 3 (July) and Splatoon 3 (September). In addition, the latest installments of the Pokémon series, Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Purple are scheduled to release in late 2022. Other publishers are also planning to release a wide range of games. Nintendo wants to increase sales by combining existing popular games with a constant stream of new games. With these initiatives, Nintendo expects to achieve a turnover of 11.6 billion euros (a decrease of 5%) and a net profit that will fall by 29% to reach 2.4 billion euros.
