The creators of Stranger Things created Upside Down Pictures and turned back to the streaming platform Netflix.
Upside Down Pictures’ first project will be a television series called Death Note, unrelated to the film directed by Adam Wingard. The original work, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, centers on the brilliant Light Yagami who discovers a mysterious black notebook that grants him supernatural power over life and death. This is shown in the spelling of the person’s name. A teenager becomes drunk with power when he decides to cleanse the world of unwanted people, and a law enforcement team tries to stop him.

Borrowing the company name from their flagship series, the Duffers will continue to develop the formula that was the driving force behind Stranger Things. The brothers said the new company will be guided by the goal of creating stories that inspired them as children, stories that take place at a crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where great spectacle coexists with intimate character work, where heart prevails over cynicism. To launch Upside Down Pictures, they hired film industry veteran Hilary Leavitt.
