The iPhone 15 Pro may feature Thunderbolt for enhanced video operations.

Videographers would be able to output live 4K video in real time while simultaneously recording their footage if Thunderbolt 3 compatibility was available.

  • A USB-C connector on the future iPhone 15 Pros might enable Thunderbolt 3.
  • The target audience for this should be mostly video fans and experts.
  • While recording, you’ll be able to output live video to a monitor.

For video production, the iPhone 15 Pro might support Thunderbolt 3.

The source of this information is the @analyst941 Twitter user. If they are right, connecting to high-performance Thunderbolt 3 accessories, including Apple external storage devices, cameras, etc., will be a breeze with the upcoming iPhone.

According to @analyst941, “a new cinematography function will allow live 4K Thunderbolt outputs to monitors while recording.”

In essence, you’ll have a phone that has all the camera controls connected to a monitor that shows live 4K video footage in a 16:9 aspect ratio.

According to earlier rumors, the USB-C connection on the standard (non-Pro) iPhone 15 models will only support USB 2.0 transfer speeds. This is the first time we’ve heard that the iPhone Pro range would enable Thunderbolt.

For example, a new cinematography feature that will allow live 4K Thunderbolt outputs to monitors while recording.

Essentially, you’ll have the phone with all the camera controls, connected to a monitor displaying live 4K camera footage without any controls; in 16:9.

You have access to Hollywood, sweetheart!

Because the iPhone Pros have features like multiple high-tech cameras, ProRes video capture, etc., Apple has marketed them as “Hollywood in your pocket.” In that regard, providing Thunderbolt capability for Pro-branded iPhones seems like the logical next step.

I haven’t heard anything in regards to standard 15’s so looks like it’s gonna be USB 2.0 standard.

Again, pros are Thunderbolt 3.

Apple is heavily invested into video recording this year, rather than stills.

Recording Output features,

Focus on importing to workstations

The only issue is that some Thunderbolt accessories have higher power requirements from the host device, which the upcoming iPhone might not be able to meet. You should be wary of this claim because @analyst941 has only so far successfully forecast the Dynamic Island feature.

Our assessment: a credible rumor

This could soon be a reality on the next iPhone | Image: Apple

All four of Apple’s iPhone 15 models this year will use USB-C. However, the insider claims that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will support Thunderbolt 3. (USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports are physically identical).

On a Mac, USB-C/Thunderbolt ports are the norm. Apple only provides Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports for tablets at this time on the third-generation 11-inch iPad Pro and the fifth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Although the previous iPad Pro models have a USB-C port, Thunderbolt devices cannot be connected to it.

As we previously mentioned, @analyst941 believes the rumored 14.1-inch iPad Pro will be able to daisy chain video output to two 6K monitors simultaneously. In other words, the hardware must be Thunderbolt compatible.
